In this world of social media, emails, must-watch TV shows, meetings, phone calls, Skype calls, WhatsApp conversations, more social media and more emails, it is increasingly hard to focus on one thing at a time. Instead, we flit from one thing to the other, never giving anything our full attention and allowing the smaller things to fall through the cracks.
Multi-tasking has become the norm: we watch TV while we’re playing on our phones; check our email during a meeting or while our children are telling us about their day; phone up to pay the vet bill while we’re cooking dinner and helping with the homework while we try to plan tomorrow morning’s meeting in our heads. How many of these tasks actually end up being done properly?
We miss the important email because just as we were scrolling through we looked up to make eye contact with our child to show we were really paying attention, but we were so busy looking at emails we didn’t take in half of what the child even said, and now they’re upset about the party they can’t go to because we didn’t hear them tell us about it two weeks ago.
Stop for a moment. Take a deep breath and reset. Allow yourself to focus on one thing at a time.
